FAQ

Q. Why was the CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) introduced?
The CBT aims to improve the standard of road safety for motorcycle & moped riders.

Q. What does the DAS test consist of?
The test consists of two separate modules. Module 1 is a series of 'off road' manoeuvres. Module 2 is the 'on road' riding part of the test.

Q. Why are special off road areas required?
The Law now requires that more demanding special manoeuvres must be included in every practical motorcycling test. These are to be conducted on specially provided off road areas for client safety and to ensure that training is undertaken in standardised conditions throughout the country.

Q. How long will the DAS test last?
The off road manoeuvres (Module 1) will take approximately 20 minutes & the on road part (Module 2) will last approximately 40 minutes.

Q. What are the off road manoeuvres during a DAS test?
The Law requires that more demanding special manoeuvres must be included in every practical motorcycling test. These include manoeuvres to be carried out at slow speed & includes a slalom, U-Turn, controlled braking and two manoeuvres to be carried out at 32 Mph/ 50Kph or faster. These are an emergency stop and a hazard avoidance manoeuvre.

Q. What happens if I fail the off road (Module 1) part of the test?
If you do fail, you can apply to retake the Module 1 test after 3 clear working days. You will not be able to take the Module 2 test until you have passed the Module 1 test.

Q. How will my speed be measured?
The examiner will use accurate speed measuring equipment. We use similar equipment during your training so you will know what to expect.

Q. What will happen if I fail to reach the required speed on the Module 1 test?
You will be allowed one more attempt at the manoeuvre.

Q. Can I fail on the off road part of the test for lack of observation?
Yes. All manoeuvres will be assessed.

Q. Will I be able to take my test in the evening or at a weekend?
Only where suitable appointments are available. At some Test Centres ‘out of hours’ testing may be limited or not available due to local planning restrictions. Check your local Test Centre availability on line.

Q. Where will the ‘show & tell’ questions be as part of the test?
After the eyesight test & before the Module 2 on road riding test.

Q. What other exercises/manoeuvres will I have to do on the road?
Normal stops, hill start, angle start & general road riding.

Q. How long will I have to wait to retake the (module 2) on road test if I fail?
10 working days.

Q. Do I have to take both the off road & on road part of the test together?
No, each test can be taken separately, but must be within 2 years of each other.

Q. If I fail the off road part of the test can I still take the on road test?
No. You must have passed the off road test before being allowed to take the on road test.

Q. At what stage must I have completed my motorcycle theory test?
Your theory test must be completed before you can take the Module 1 test. The theory test is not required for Compulsory Basic Training (CBT).
